London 18/01/2016 - MMG's Las Bambas copper mine in Peru has made its first shipment of around 10,000 tonnes of copper concentrates, the company said.

The shipment, which left the Port of Matarani in Peru on January 15, is heading to China, it said in a press release.

In its first full year of operation, the mine is expected to be one of the three leading copper-producing mines in the world. It is currently one of the largest copper projects in construction on a resource basis, according to MMG.

Las Bambas has ore reserves of 6.9 million tonnes of copper (0.73 percent copper grade) and a mineral resource of 10.5 million tonnes of copper (0.61 percent copper grade).

It is owned by a consortium of MMG (62.5 percent), Guoxin International Investment Co (22.5 percent) and CITIC Metal Co (15 percent), which purchased the mine from Glencore in 2014.
