Chicago 02/02/2016 - Average daily volumes on CME in January were a record 18.2 million contracts per day, an increase of 16 percent over the same period a year earlier, it said.

Total volume in January was more than 345 million contracts, of which 85 percent were traded electronically. Options volume averaged a record 4.3 million contracts per day, up 37 percent from January 2015.

As for metals, volume averaged 405,000 contracts per day, down one percent on the prior January.

CME trades copper, aluminium, zinc, gold and silver through its Comex metals division. It also bought the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) in August 2008, where contracts include platinum and palladium.

Energy volumes jumped 18 percent year-over-year to 2.6 million contracts per day. The exchange saw growth in three of six areas, with foreign exchange, agricultural commodities and metals slipping three percent or less.
