METALS PEOPLE - Avanco Resources appoints gm for Brazil's Antas copper mine

Singapore 10/03/2016 - Australia-listed Avanco Resources has appointed Otavio Monteiro as general manager of its Antas copper mine in Brazil.

Monteiro, who has been with Avanco for around two years, was promoted from the position of plant manager, the company said Wednesday.

Monteiro is a chemical engineer with around 25 years of experience in the metallurgical and chemical industries. He was a general manager with Vale’s aluminium companies Alunonorte and Albras, responsible for the aluminium refinery and smelting plants respectively.

He holds an MBA and is a native of northern Brazil.

Jair Hipólito, a fellow Brazilian, has been appointed plant manager to replace Monteiro. Hipólito has 24 years of experience in the extractive industry and has worked with Anglo American, Rio Tinto, Votorantim, Yamana and Vale.

The Antas copper mine in Carajás Mineral Province in northern Brazil produced its first copper concentrate earlier this month, with first shipment of copper concentrate targeted for April.

Commissioning of the mine will start by the end of March after of which it will produce around 12,000 tonnes per year of copper in concentrates when in full production.
