Hong Kong 16/06/2016 - The 600,000 tonnes per year (10-percent nickel containing) second phase expansion of Tsingshan Holding Group’s nickel pig iron (NPI) project in Indonesia has reached full capacity production this month after recent months of output ramp-up, Kevin He, vice president of Tsingshan Holding Group told FastMarkets on the sidelines of Metal Bulletin's stainless steel conference in Hong Kong.

This takes Tsingshan’s NPI production capacity in in the Morowali district of central Sulawesi province to 900,000 tonnes per year when the 300,000-tonne-per-year first phase of the project is taken into consideration.

The third phase of the project, which can produce another 600,000-700,000 tonnes per year of NPI, is currently under construction and should hit full capacity in the second half of next year, He added.

The NPI produced by Tsingshan are presently shipped back to China for its own consumption. Tsingshan is China’s largest stainless steel producer.

Tsingshan also has plans to build a 1-million-tonne-per-year capacity stainless steel mill in Indonesia which will focus on producing the high nickel-containing 300-series stainless steel grade. On completion of the mill, Tsingshan's NPI production in Indonesia will be used at the mill.
