Singapore 01/07/2016 - China’s year-on-year refined copper production growth slowed to 6.6 percent in May from 14.9 percent in April, according to data published by China’s National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC) this week.

The May growth rate was however 1.3 percentage points higher than the same month last year.

NDRC did not provide single month production volumes.

China’s refined copper output had risen 9.7 percent year-on-year to 3.35 million tonnes in January-May – up 0.2 percentage points from the same period last year – but slows from the 11-percent growth it achieved in the first four months of this year.

The government’s data differed from that tabulated by Shanghai Metals Market (SMM). The Chinese metals research firm’s survey showed Chinese electrolytic copper production rising 16.1 percent year-on-year to 648,000 tonnes in May.

This had taken copper production to 3.16 million tonnes in the first five months of the year, up 7.1 percent year-on-year, according to SMM.
