Chicago 12/07/2016 - US consumption of aluminium extrusions totalled 5.1 billion pounds (2.3 million tonnes) in 2015, an increase of 4.6 percent over 2014, the Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) and the Aluminum Association said.

It's the sixth straight year that extrusion products have grown and the industry has seen a 48 percent increase in annual shipments compared to 2009, the group said.

Building and construction continued to be the largest market segment at 1.91 billion pounds (37.4 percent of the domestic market) - the end market saw a 4.5 percent uptick compared to the previous year, the report said.

Specifically doors and windows grew 4.8 percent over 2014, while curtain walls, store fronts and entrances jumped 8.8 percent year-over-year.

Transportation extrustions rose by 8.7 percent to 1.63 billion pounds. The auto industry saw record sales last year and the momentum has continued through the first half of 2016.

"What is most exciting about these results is the growth the industry is realizing overall, especially in automotive applications," Jeff Henderson, president of the Aluminum Extruders Council, said.

"Even though our largest end use category, building and construction, grew a modest 4.5 percent last year, it was the fourth consecutive year we’ve seen increases. However, unlike four years ago, the base has grown. So now, these increases are actually reflective of significant volumes for extrusion producers," Henderson added.

Consumer durables, machinery and equipment and electrical uses all jumped roughly 10 percent.

In terms of shipments, US and Canadian producers exported 303 million pounds (137,438 tonnes) of extrusions in 2015 or 5.6 percent of the total industry shipments.
