Chicago 30/08/2016 - Freeport-McMoran said a 33-year old worker died at its El Abra acid discharge terminal in Chile, the company said in a release on Tuesday.
"The cause of the accident is being investigated. After the accident, the emergency protocol was immediately put in place, including a suspension of operations in the acid discharge terminal. Mining and processing operations at El Abra continue while the investigation is being conducted," a company spokesman told FastMarkets.
Freeport has a 51 percent ownership in the mine with state-owned Codelco holding the remaining 49 percent stake. In the second quarter, the operation produced 56 million pounds of copper.
