London 10/09/2016 - The strike at Codelco's copper mine El Salvador in Chile has ended on Friday after five days, the Chilean company said.

Workers from Union No 2 have agreed to end the strike after accepting the same pay offer they had initially rejected two weeks ago because they have realised the difficult situation at Salvador, Codelco aid in a release.

The division has resumed all operations and all contract workers have been reincorporated.

Two weeks ago, 57 percent of Union No 2 members rejected Codelco's pay offer while 73 percent of workers of Union No 6 accepted it.

Codelco had explained that a strike at Salvador was a threat to the division's viability amid falling ore grades and surging production costs

Salvador is one of Codelco's smaller mining projects - it produced 49,000 tonnes of copper in 2015, down from 54,000 tonnes in 2014 and just three percent of the company's mining output.

Codelco recorded a loss of $97 million in the first half of the year despite lowering cash costs due to a 21-percent fall in the price of copper and a massive investment programme needed to upgrade ageing mines.
