London 20/09/2016 - South Korea's Public Procurement Service (PPS) bought 2,000 tonnes of aluminium at premiums of $69-70.5 per tonne via a tender, it said today.

The premiums represent a 12 percent increase on levels which PPS purchased aluminium at in August.

Split into two lots, PPS bought 1,000 tonnes of Australian aluminium, which is import duty free, from Korean trader LG International at a premium of $70.5 per tonne bais cost, insurance and freight (CIF) to the port of Inchon.

PPS also bought 1,000 tonnes of Indian origin aluminium, also tax free, from Korean Hiho Metals at a premium of $69 per tonne CIF Inchon.

The South Korean market is becoming flooded with aluminium as producers and traders continue to take advantage of warehouse incentives of around $40-45 per tonne there.

Consequently spot premiums for aluminium remain at low levels of $55-65 per tonne on a CIF basis.
