Singapore 07/10/2016 - Newmont Mining Corp has appointed Andrew Woodley to lead its North America business starting January 2, 2017, the US-based gold and copper producer said on Wednesday, October 5.

Woodley succeeds Tom Kerr - formerly Newmont’s senior vice president of North America - who has retired after 32 years at the company.

Woodley was previously president and ceo of Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mining operations in Mongolia. Prior to Oyu Tolgoi, he was managing director for Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique and country head for Rio Tinto in Mozambique.

“Andrew is an accomplished operations and business leader with more than 20 years’ experience driving improvements in safety, productivity and sustainability,” Tom Palmer, executive vice president and chief operating officer, said in a statement.

“His broad leadership experience delivering step-change improvements in mining, minerals processing and project development make him the right leader to build on our North America region’s strong performance, and to deliver our strategy.”

Newmont had recently sold its stake in the Batu Hijau copper and gold mine in Indonesia, taking it closer to becoming a pure-play gold mining company.
