Singapore 11/10/2016 - China's Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes Co has initiated nickel pig iron (NPI) production on Obi Island in Indonesia's North Maluku province, the company said.

The project's No.1 furnace produced its first NPI on Tuesday, October 4, the company said in a statement that was posted on the website of China's state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) this week. It is also carrying out the start-up of its No.2 furnace is.

The project is led by PT MSP - a joint venture between Xinxing and Indonesia's Harita Group - and has capacity of 190,000 tonnes per year of NPI with nickel content of at least 11%.

Indonesia is set to produce 104,760 tonnes of nickel in NPI this year, with output set to rise to 186,840 tonnes next year, China Merchant Futures (CMF) said at Metal Bulletin's nickel conference in Jakarta last month.

PT SMI, Qingdao Hengshun Zhongsheng Group, Zhenshi Group Eastern Special Steel, PT Indoferro, Indonesia Century Metallurgy Co are likely to be the five leading NPI contributors to Indonesian nickel output this year, according to CMF.

PT SMI, which is owned by Tsingshan Holding Group, is likely to produce around 80,000 tonnes of nickel contained in NPI this year.
